ATM's

Hi! I'm an entering freshman for class of 2010, and I had two quick questions for y'all.

Does anyone know if there are ATM's on campus, and if so where and what branch?

I thought I saw one in the Student Center for Bank of America, but can anyone confirm that?

Thanks!

There is an ATM for Bank of America in the Student Center; they also have ATMs in the Infinite Corridor and in Kendall Square.

There's another ATM in the Infinite; I think it's the MIT credit union, but I don't remember for sure.

There are both BOA and MITFCU ATM's in the Infinite.

There is also an actual BOA branch in the Student Center. There are also several ATM's and bank branches of various varieties in Central Square, which isn't too far away.

There's another Bank of America ATM on the corner of Mass Ave and Vassar.

I think there's also an ATM on the fisrt floor of building 32 (the Stata Center). I don't know what bank it is.

It's MITFCU, I'm pretty sure. The MITFCU branch is in Kendall Sq.

MITFCU is in Kendall Square FSVO of Kendall Square, anyway (it's on Portland St, on that side of the Tech Square complex). There's a Bank of America branch (formerly Fleet, formerly BankBoston, formerly BayBank, formerly Harvard Trust) in Kendall Square, also.

It's actually in Tech Square, not technically in Kendall.

There are Bank of America *and* MITFCU ATMs in the Student Center, the Infinite Corridor, and Stata (32).

MITFCU is friendlier, but BoA is easier to find elsewhere (MITFCU is a SUM network member, so you escape many of the fees, but you can't make deposits at a non-MITFCU ATM if your account is with MITFCU)

actually, stata only has an MITFCU. not a BofA.

How strange, I could have sworn there was another ATM in there.
Oops. Sorry!

There's another MITFCU on the first floor of building E19.

Dude, are those Stargate mood icons I see? Way to be.

Bank of America ATMs are everywhere in Boston; at some point friends and I were trying to figure out if we could plot a course to the supermarket *without* passing a BoA -- it wouldn't be easy.

Aye, that be the moods of SG-1 :)

Well, it seems like BoA is going to be my bank of choice if there that plentiful.

Well, it depends - they're a giant national corporation, and they have no particular incentive to give a fuck about you. They have a relatively bad local reputation with regards to fees and customer service and whatnot. Banks that are members of SUM are pretty plentiful as well, and it's not like most people generally need to do anything but withdraw money when they're out on the town [so the inability to deposit at a SUM ATM that doesn't belong to your home bank isn't much of a problem.]

So sure, if you're looking for sheer number of ATMs, Fleet [er, BoA] is what you want. If you're looking for a bank that's likely to treat you well [i.e., low/no account fees, higher interest rates, etc.], MITFCU or other smaller local banks or credit unions are better. And really, it isn't that hard to stop at an ATM before you leave campus, or to walk a block further to find a SUM ATM.

Also, since once a member, always a member, it can be a good idea to join MITFCU just to have that option forever. Credit unions can be a lot friendlier than big corporate banks in terms of loan rates and fees, especially to smaller-balance customers.
I belonged to my parents' employer's credit union in DC while an undergrad in MA, and not having a local branch or ATM really wasn't that big of a deal. Rather than use ATMs, I would ask for cashback when making debit-card purchases at places like CVS, Star Market, etc. I think I paid an ATM fee maybe four times in four years; then again, I try to minimize my cash use. The CU treated me much better than BankBoston (which became Fleet, which became BoA) treated my friends. Now, MITFCU is my principal bank and I keep the DC CU account as backup since I'm planning to move back there.

What are the MITFCU membership criteria today? When I was a student we couldn't join....

Now any student can join, or any family of a student. It's not totally clear whether, like for car insurance, they'll consider you "family" if you are a housemate, but I wouldn't be surprised.

BofA provides free accounts as well, but there are mininimum balance requirements. I think 10,000 or so, which is significantly higher than the FCU, but money in linked CD accounts counts towards the 10k, so it's really not so bad if you're bringing some money along.

I would pass along that if you plan on travelling at all, Bank of America has the "omni-present ubiquitous" thing going for it. It ain't Dunkin Donuts in Boston, but it's pretty convenient to find and use in most places.

One point about Bank of America: the default student deal is pretty crappy. I'd avoid anything with extra fees, but especially anything that basically says "here's this awesome deal for students (that will turn into something horrible in four years when you graduate, but you won't bother to change your bank!)".

I use BoA (formerly Fleet), but that's only because I got an account at one of their first branches in PA which was doing a special "free checking for life" account, which they have in fact kept to. But the local Fleet cashier folks were always very surprised that any Fleet customers had such a deal :)

FYI - I just noticed that MITFCU has started rebating ATM surcharges paid to out-of-network banks. I had to use an ATM out of state last month, and all of a sudden the $2 fee (paid to the other bank) showed up as a rebate in my account. Nice. It appears to be a new program called Smart Money Rewards, for which anyone with direct deposit qualifies.
